Meditation has become a trendsetter in the last decade and many people have started doing it in their daily routine. There are many types of meditations done for different purposes. One of the most commonly quoted purpose of doing meditation in the beginning stage is relaxation or stress management. Another common purpose is for healing psychological issues. We will try to explain the science behind meditation and will guide you with different purposes and its benefits.

What is the ancient science behind meditation?

Every spiritual guru, prophet, gurus of different religions have always focused on refining our thoughts and emotions. When our thoughts and emotions are not calm, we are prone to attract psychosomatic ailments and these ailments are the cause of 95% of our physical diseases. When any thought is generated in the mind, an emotion associated with that particular thought emerges. The same emotion impacts the flow of prana in our energy body. If the thought is positive, it will generate positive and healthy emotion which are good for our health, mind and spirit. If the thought generated is negative, it will generate negative and unhealthy emotions which will disrupt the prana flow in our body leading to various psychological and physical diseases. Medical(Neurological) science has accepted that negative thoughts and emotions generate unhealthy neurochemicals in our brain which manifest as different diseases in our body whereas positive thoughts and attitude generate healthy neurochemicals.

Generally, our mind is attracted to negative thoughts and emotions like anger, frustration, irritation etc because of the tendency to react to situations or the people having different opinions than ours. Based on the background of different religions, caste, culture and political beliefs, we have developed some intolerance towards people holding different religious or political views. With this intolerance, we have attracted many negative feelings like hatred, frustration, irritation into our body system. These negative thoughts and feelings are continuously disrupting our prana flow in our energy body. If we don’t stop these negative thoughts and emotions, it will continue affecting our health which will lead to various psychosomatic, psychological and physical diseases. It is very important to note that 95% of our physical health ailments are the results of psychosomatic and psychological issues. As there is no pill for stoping negative thoughts and emotions, we have to do self practice and efforts to regulate our emotions and thoughts. With every person and in every situation, we have to stop reacting and learn to respond. The refining process of thoughts and emotions is only possible by going inwards i.e. through inner science or spiritual science. In Spritual science, breathing and meditation has been given most focus to refine the thoughts and emotions.

As per esoteric science, everything in this universe is made up of energy and has some vibrations & frequency. Same goes with our bodies. All the negative emotions like anger, frustration are of lower frequency and comes under the category of gross energy. On the other hand, positive emotions and thoughts are of higher frequency and comes under the category of subtle energy. In our life, we need to perform activities which bring subtle energy in our life not gross energy.

What happens when we meditate?

When we meditate, our consciousness is raised to higher and subtler frequencies of love, tranquility, happiness, bless and peace rising above the worldly affairs of fear, anxiety, insecurity. The greater the stillness, physical and internal, the greater we are encompassed in the energy of the soul. The Soul energy heals physical and emotional issues and helps to magnetize greater prosperous opportunities in life.

Many medical studies have been conducted on the brain of meditation practitioner where it has been found that meditation changes the structure of the brain. In research, brain regions responsible for anxiety, fear, emotions appeared to be shrunk. On the other hand, brain regions responsible for learning, concentration, decision making, awareness etc appeared to be thicker. Therefore, a person feel less fear and more focused or concentrated towards its goal with the continuous practice of meditation. Region(s) responsible for information processing seems to slow down during meditation and hence, making the person relaxed.
